何よりも映画が大好き。中国語の映画でも何でも。
暇さえあれば、映画のチャンネルを「open」している。
It helps.
中国語は、読んだり書いたりするより、話したり聞いたりするほうが得意。
他人と比べて言語の習得は早いほう。
映画はその時代や世代の趨勢を反映している。
日本語であれば、３ヶ月ここに暮らせば、サバイバルの日本語は習得できると思う。
シルクドソレイユの「O」というショーがすばらしい。ラスベガスで。
両親は、高齢にもかかわらず、幼い子供のように、ショーの間ずっと身を乗り出していた。両親のそういう姿をみるのはうれしいものだ。

As you read this, kids in at least 30 places around the world are living in war zones. The conflicts you may have heard the most about are in Iraq and Afghanistan, because U.S. soldiers are fighting in both countries.
Now a new war has captured the world's attention, one in the troubled Middle East. Children on both sides of the conflict are in the middle.
The latest fighting is between the forces of the nation of Israel and an organization called Hamas, which stands for "Islamic Resistance Movement" and has vowed to destroy Israel.
The war is unfolding in the Gaza Strip, an area of towns, villages and farmland about twice the size of Washington, D.C. The Gaza Strip is bordered by Israel, Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea.

Controlled by Hamas, the area has about 1.5 million Palestinians living in it, about 80 percent of whom live in poverty.
To understand this new war, you need to know that Israel was created in 1948 to be a homeland for Jewish people after World War II, when millions of them were killed by the Nazis. Many Arabs in the Middle East believe the land to create Israel was unfairly taken from Arabs who were living there, people called Palestinians. Several wars between Israelis and Arabs have been fought since then. One of them happened in 1967. Israel's army, under threat of Arab attack, took over territory that the Palestinians see as their future country. Gaza is part of that territory.
But all Palestinians do not agree on how big their country should be or who should run it. Some want it to be created next to Israel in Gaza and other land Israel has kept its army in since 1967. Others, such as Hamas, believe what is now Israel should be part of a Palestinian country. Hamas is fighting in part to take control of the land.
Israel, the United States and other countries consider Hamas to be a terrorist group because of the way it fights Israel: using suicide bombers, people who blow themselves up and kill innocent people as well as themselves. Hamas also fires rockets from Gaza into Israel.
But to many Palestinians, Hamas is a political party that runs hospitals and schools in Gaza, and so is seen by many Arabs as a defender of Palestinian rights.
From about June to December last year, there was relative calm on the Gaza-Israel border because both sides had agreed not to attack each other. Then in December, Hamas suddenly started firing rockets into Israel again.
Israel's powerful army launched an invasion of Gaza so, the Israeli government said, its soldiers could put an end to Hamas's ability to fire rockets.
Since the fighting began, more than 800 Palestinians have died and several thousand have been wounded. Hamas says many of them have been women and children. Thirteen Israelis, including six soldiers, have died.
Palestinians say the large number of dead and wounded shows that Israel is attacking them with too much force. Israel says a big reason so many Palestinians have died is that Hamas puts fighters and military equipment in the middle of areas packed with innocent people. So when Israel targets those fighters, civilians get caught in the fighting.
Other governments, including the United States, are working hard to get both sides to stop the war. But the fighting is very emotional because it involves issues of religion, land, identity and survival. That is what makes the Israeli-Palestinian conflict so difficult -- and why peace has been so difficult to achieve.

Q．語学に興味を持たれたのはいつ頃からですか？
　4-5歳の頃だったと思います。その頃、近くに英語圏の夫婦が住んでいたんです。それで英語の響きが面白くてよくペラペラ～と音を真似していました。友達とおままごとする時も、よし！今日は英語でしゃべろう！とか言って、意味をなしていない英語（のつもり）でしゃべっていましたね（笑）。中学校から英語を習い始め、最初はわりと得意だったんですが、段々不得意になってきて・・大学も英文科でしたがしまいには赤点でしたね。それでももともとは語学にすごく興味があったのだから、英語が話せるようになりたいと思って英会話教室に通ったり色々と試しましたが全然駄目でしたね。

Q. いつ頃からフランス語に興味を？
　英語がいくら頑張っても出来なかったこともあって、英語は諦めました。フランス語は「星の王子さま」がきっかけです。10代のころですがこの本を読んでものすごく感動したんです。それがフランス人の作家だと知って、フランス語というかフランス人の考え方・哲学のようなものに魅かれたのが始まりでした。大学進学の時も本当は仏文科に行きたかったんですが、優等生の子しか受験させてもらえなかったので、それで仕方なく英文科に入りました。その後、ちょうど大学2年生の時、お茶の水の小道を歩いていたら目の前に紫色の建物が現れました。珍しいので何の建物かと思い中に入ったらフランス語の学校でした！（アテネ・フランセでした）。もうびっくりでした。フランス語の学校があったんだ！（その当時はフランス語学校があることすら知らない世間知らず（？）でした・・それを探すほど積極的な生き方もしてなかった・・）。運命の出会いというしかありませんでした。大学でも第2外国語でフランス語をとっていましたが、授業中に居眠りしたり（笑）それこそ赤点をとっていましたね。アテネ・フランセに通いはじめて改めて本格的に勉強を始めました。最初の1年は楽しくて、集中して勉強しどんどん伸びていきましたね。2年目になるとだんだん勢いが落ちてきて、だらだらなりながらもどうにか最終課程まで修了させました。その後、フランスに留学しました。

Q. 念願のフランスでのお話を聞かせて下さい。
　夏期講習から行ったんですが、海と太陽が好きだったので、南の海側がいいな～と思っていて、そしたらモンペリエにいい大学があるからと言われて行きました。行く前に、友達とお別れ会と称した飲み会をガンガンやっていたら、いざ飛行機に乗ると風邪をひいてしまって、パリに降り立つ頃には38度位の熱があってフラフラでした。パリで１週間滞在して南に行く予定でホテルをとっていましたが、1週間ホテルのベッドに倒れ込んだままでした。ホームシックにもなるし・・ビックリなスタートでした（笑）。その後モンペリエに行ったらすっごい田舎で、東京で生まれ育った私には衝撃的でした。いや～すごい所に来てしまった・・と思いましたね。自分が思い描いていたフランスのイメージとは程遠い感じだし、田舎なので日本人が珍しくてじろじろ見られるし、夏の終わり、９月にはもう北風が吹くし（ミストラルという有名な冷たい風です）、うすら寂しくなりました・・。ニースに移ってからやっと立ち直って元気になりましたね。大学は丘の上にあってお教室からは海が見渡せるので授業中はボ～っと眺めてました。学校に行く時も麓から高級別荘街を通りながら丘を上がって行くのですが、ブーゲンビリアやミモザの花が咲き乱れ、本当にきれいな場所で、夢の世界みたいでした。最初はニースに1年くらいいて、後はパリにでも移ろうと思っていたのですが、あまりにも居心地が良かったので、まるまる4年間居着いてしまいました。

Q. フランスでの苦労談はなんですか？
　いや～すっごく苦労しましたよ（笑）。最初に筆記試験を受けて最上級クラスに入ってしまったものの、クラスに日本人は私1人で他はみんなヨーロッパのフランスに近いイタリア人・スペイン人などでけっこう話せるんです。その中で1番苦労したのは友達関係ですね。やっぱり言葉が話せなくて言いたいことも言えない・聞いても分からない状態というのが一番辛かったですね。

Q. 通訳・翻訳者になろうと思ったのはいつ頃からですか？
　帰国後はフランス系企業に勤めました。その業務の中で自然と通訳・翻訳業務をするようになり、学校に通い始めました。そこで翻訳の仕事を頂いていました。フリーランスになろうと思ったのは、ただ単に会社勤めがいやになったんです（笑）。その時にちょうど、フランス映画の字幕翻訳のお仕事を頂き、すごく打ちこめたんです。それでやっぱりこっちの方がいいやと思ってフリーになりました。当時は翻訳の仕事がメインでしたが、今は圧倒的に通訳の方が多いですね。

Q. 失敗談はありますか？
　沢山の人前で、簡単な挨拶の通訳をした時、緊張で頭真っ白になって何も聞こえなくなったことがありましたね。どうやってやり抜いたのか覚えていませんが、確か3名体制だったので、きっとパートナーの方が助けてくれたんだと思います。

Q. 山中さんにとっての通訳の魅力を教えて下さい。
　何といっても色々な分野や素晴らしい方々に出会えることですね。自分では目を向けていなかった事や出会えなかった人に、仕事を通して出会えるのが通訳の醍醐味だと思います。

Q. 通訳の難しさはなんですか？
　分野や人との相性もありますが、話し方というのは人それぞれで、話し方によって、うまく自分の頭の細胞に入って来るときとどうもうまく入って来ないときがありますね。そういう時はやりずらさを感じますね。人との相性は自分ではどうにも出来ないことですものね。仕事中は特に何を感じるわけでもなく本当に集中していますが、逆にゆったりとした仕事の場合の方が、時間が過ぎるのが長いので疲れを感じますね。贅沢な悩みですけど（笑）。

Q. もし通訳になっていなかったら？
　最初は料理人になりたいと思っていました。フランス留学をした時、バイトでガイドの仕事をしたのですが、ラッキーなことに高級レストランへ行く機会が結構ありました。そこで覚えた味を真似して、自分で作ったり、やはり料理の好きな友達と作りあったり、していましたね。今でも料理は大好きで和食よりもフレンチもどきやイタリアンのほうが得意ですね。仕事で食品関係もするので、その時に食材を頂いたりして嬉しくて色々な食材を試して料理をします。ワインも大好き。なので試飲会の仕事は嬉しいです！プライベートでも行きますし。フランスの食生活は、留学した当初から本当に肌にあっていて、日本食が恋しくなるような事はまずなかったんです。

Q. 山中さんの息抜きは何ですか？
　息抜きは、時間に縛られずに好きな時に好きな事をすることですね。あとは体のリフレッシュにホットヨガに通ったり、簡易ジムに通ったりしています。気持ちがいいことをすることがいちばんの息抜きですよね。体にいいこと・自然にいいことをすることが、今私にとっていちばん気持ちのいいことなので、食生活でも、出来るだけオーガニックの食品を使うようにして（使うことで生産者への支援にもなるし）、大好きな料理をし、エコな生活を心がけています。

Q. 今後の目標・夢はなんですか？
　通訳や翻訳と違うことを将来やりたいなと思うこともありましたが・・でも考えるとみんなプロでやっている世界なので、そこに入っていくのは難しいですよね。どんな仕事でもプロになるまでがどれだけ大変かがわかるので、自分の仕事としては、通訳・翻訳しかないと思っています。本当は翻訳が物凄く好きなんですが、元気な時期に翻訳ばかりしていると閉じこもりになり気分があまりよくないので、外に出る通訳の方が今は好きです。後々は翻訳をメインにやって行きたいですね。

Q. 通訳・翻訳者を目指す方へのアドバイス
　通訳でも翻訳でも魂を入れる事がポイントかなと思います。技術だけではなくて、魂で当たれば怖くない！っじゃないですけど（笑）。私は技術的に高い方ではありませんが、通訳・翻訳でも魂を入れればどうにかなるかなと思います。通訳であれば、話している本人になり変ったつもりで考えるといい通訳ができるし。翻訳であっても、書いた本人になり変って訳すと本当にいい仕事が出来ると思います。またそれとは別に、商談通訳の場合ですが、相手の言っていることだけを通訳していても話がまとまらないことがあります。話の方向性を見ながら、クライアントにどういう方向性でいきたいのかを最初に確認する。教えてもらえない時は、読み取ることが大切だと思います。商談の場合、何かが成立する事が目的ですから、その成立に導くように人の話を向けるのも通訳の技術の1つですよね。ただただ、言われた事をそのまま訳すだけだと、成立するものも成立しなかったりしますし、それは残念なことだと思います。いつも上手くいくわけではないですが、そういう心がけも必要ですよね。

　まさにパリジェンヌ！と私の勝手なイメージですが、本当にオシャレで素敵な方でした。夢のような町・二―スのお話や、ご趣味のお料理のお話では、私の個人的な興味で首を突っ込んで色々と聞いてしまいましたが、本当に気さくにご対応頂き、まさにカッコイイ女性といった感じでした。また、アドバイスで、商談通訳の際に話の成立に導く通訳をする。というお話を聞き、改めて通訳という仕事の奥深さ、難しさを教えて頂きました。

This text below is taken from the updated and expanded 2005 version of Conference Interpreting-- A students' Comanion by Andrew Gilles (see bibliography) and suggests some strategies for acquring language at advanced level. It is reporduced with kind permission of Tertium, Cracow. These two exercises are probably the single most rapid and effective way of expanding your active language skills that you will find. All you need is a little application.

3.5 Learn by heart, and practice reciting, 5-10 lines of well written text in your B language every day. Each day check that you still know all the previous days' texts each day. This may sound ambitious but it won't acturally take more than 10 minutes and after a week you will find yourself using the new structures and expressions when you speak your B language. This exercise will contribute very quickly and effectively to expanding the active vocabulary of your B language by moving not only words but also entire structures instantaneously from your passive to your active knowledge of a language. In a short time, you will have large body of good quality language that can be recalled instantaneously.

Learn off-by-heart and mimic 2 minute extracts from, interviews, speeches and stand-up comedians in your B language. Copy the speaker's sentence intonation as well as pronunciation. Learn one per day and each day check that you still know all the previous days' texts. This exercise will help you develop the correct sentence intonation and rhythm when speaking your B language. Both are very difficult to learn and often give away foreign speakers of English who otherwise have a very good command of the language.
In addition learning extracts by heart will function as in 3.5, moving words, structures and here also intonation patterns directly from passive to active language knowledge.
(Comedians are mentioned here because to sound really authentic you will have to feel like you are exaggeratign the accent when you speak... but in fact it wll not be as over the top as you think. )

時に昼食もそこそこに、日曜日の夜から目の色を変えて働くアメリカ人。

この雑誌のこのコラムは必ず読むという定点観測ポイントを持つ。いい本をそこから見つけ出すヒントにもなる。

政治家のようにアドレナリン系のどんどん動き回る仕事では寝不足もいいが、知的活動には不向き。
また、じっくりクリエイトする仕事は、肉体的には疲れているが、日中考えていたことが整理されるという夜に向いている。一方ルーチンの書類作成などてきぱきやるにこしたことがない仕事は朝が向いている。

「お勉強」こそ基礎がすべて。とにかく飽きるほど暗記と基礎を繰り返せ。参考書ではなく、問題集を暗記せよ。即答できるまで、うんざりするくらい、「問題集」を繰り返せ。こう聞かれれば、こう答えると反射神経でわかるようになるまで！

そして、始めるのは一日でも早いに越したことはない。

According to sources, the U.S. Navy has deployed at least five destroyers, all of them believed to be equipped with the Standard Missile-3, which can intercept ballistic missiles.
North Korea has said it intends to launch a rocket carrying a communications satellite between April 4 and 8. Japan, South Korea and the United States, however, believe the launch is a cover for a long-range missile test. The destroyers are expected to be deployed in waters surrounding Japan ahead of the expected launch date.
Three destroyers of the U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet have entered Sasebo Port in Nagasaki since Monday. Two left the port Wednesday morning, and another destroyer moored at Aomori Port left Thursday afternoon. The three vessels are expected to operate somewhere in the Sea of Japan or the Pacific Ocean near Japan.
